He was one of many siblings—he came from a polygamous family his father was a policeman with three wives and altogether about 18 children. Grew up in Homa Bay, attending both primary and secondary school there. From a young age, he was drawn to music. He first experimented with homemade instruments—drums and guitars made from tins and strings—before advancing to real instruments. --- Musical journey After high school, he decided to pursue music seriously, even though music in Kenya in the 1980s was not considered a lucrative or highly respected profession. He and his younger brother, Omondi Tony (Tony Omondi Mumbo), formed the band Orchestra Limpopo International (aka Limpopo Band) in 1990. For many years the band struggled: performing in small, obscure clubs having difficulties getting stable gigs losing band members moving around trying to find good performance bases. Over time, Musa Juma developed a distinctive style. He blended Benga (a Kenyan guitar‐driven dance music genre rooted in Luo tradition) with Congolese Rhumba/Lingala influence. He described his sound as “Benga Internationale.” He was known not only as a singer but also a guitarist (lead guitar) and composer. Merging vocals, rhythm, compelling guitar riffs and lyrics that often spoke about love, culture, societal issues, integrity, humility. --- Major works / style Some of his most famous songs include: “Hera Mudho,” “Hera Mwandu,” “Siaya Kababa,” “Clackson,” “Mercelina,” “Freddy,” “Ufisadi,” among others. He released eight albums, his last one being Lake Victoria. Lyrics often touched on love, morality, societal vices, humility, and issues affecting Luo culture, but his appeal was broader because of the fusion style and inclusion of Swahili and sometimes English. --- Character, values & working style Known for being disciplined, hard‐working. He spent many hours practising, composing, arranging his shows. He had strong principles: he didnt accept gifts or handouts while performing on stage he kept to his own order of songs avoided excessive showmanship and was modest in how he carried himself. Through his music, he promoted culture (especially Luo culture), social awareness, love, friendship, integrity. --- Tours, acclaim & influence Over time, Limpopo International became one of the more famous bands in Kenyan Benga/Rhumba circles. Musa Juma became a household name. He also toured internationally. For example, in 2010, he had a tour in the United States (various states) to perform for the Kenyan diaspora. He also mentored or worked with other musicians, incorporating talents from Kenya and from neighbouring countries, guests from Congo, Tanzania, etc. --- Death After returning from the US tour in 2010, Musa Juma developed chest problems. He was admitted to Mombasa Hospital and later died of pneumonia on 15 March 2011. At the time of his death, he was survived by his wife, Winnie, and their daughter, Victoria Amanda Awuor Juma. --- Legacy Many consider that after MJs death, there was a noticeable void in the Rhumba / Benga music scene — his style, quality, and discipline set a high bar that few have matched. Fans continue to celebrate his music his songs still get played, loved, and cover themes that still resonate (love, social justice, culture). There have been memorials and tributes, both in Kenya and abroad, on anniversaries of his death. His bands name (or variant) lives on: after his death, his sister Milly Fedha took over leadership and the band was renamed Super Limpopo International.
